Safe and ready weekend everyone

I don't know about ya'all but several hours ago now I switched gears from thinking of what I'm going to do with my kids this weekend to what I'm going to do to protect them in the face of this hurricane quickly approaching. I hit the grocery store, stocked up on water and non-perishables, I've been finding all the candles and flashlights and batteries in the house, packing up emergency bags for the family. Turning CNN on, getting panicky, turning CNN off. You know, your typical disaster preparedness activities.

Anyway because of the anticipated extreme weather this weekend I'm really doubting that many of us are going to be out with the kids as much as usual (if at all). So, rather than post our usual weekend phillyfun tips I thought I'd post some resources to help you as you prepare to keeo you and your families and your houses safe this weekend. And if you really do want to know what's going on this weekend, in case this whole thing fizzles out (please God), check out my post on CBS Philly.com for some select weekend phillyfun picks.

I'll keep adding to this as I continue to prepare myself, my home and my family for what lies ahead in the coming hours. But I am sending each and every one of you my prayers for safety for you and your families. Be well, friends!!

Every nine seconds of each school day, a young person drops out of high school in the U.S. P&G’s GIVE Education campaign will increase awareness of the student dropout crisis in the U.S. and raise funds to help keep millions of students in school. By partnering with Communities In Schools (CIS), one of the nation’s leading dropout prevention organizations, and one that is proven to increase graduation rates and decrease dropout rates, GIVE Education will enable CIS to continue channeling much-needed resources to students who are at greatest risk of dropping out.

Tales from the City of Motherly Love - West Philly

I'm over the moon to announce our next Guest Mommy in the Tales from the City of Motherly Love series. Today's guest mommy post is by West Philly Mama (aka Sandra Telep) of Pleasantly Furious who I was lucky enough to meet at a recent Philadelphia Social Media Moms blogger event. Sandra is smart and gracious not to mention wonderful and though I've only met her briefly I can tell already that she'd be one of those forever friends if you are lucky enough to get to know her (which I sure I hope I am over the coming months!). Many thanks to Sandra for sharing her unique take on her particular part of this great City of Motherly Love.

West Philly: A Parents’ Beginners Guide - by Sandra Telep

My family moved to West Philly about a year ago – by accident. We knew nothing about the area and were brand new to parenting (our little monkey was barely three months old) – so it was pure luck that landed us in this gorgeous, walkable, family-friendly, urban neighborhood.

Lots of Philadelphia area families come to West Philly for major attractions like the Please Touch Museum and The Philadelphia Zoo. They may even come to Clark Park for the fantastic playgrounds, busy Farmers’ Market or special events like Shakespeare in the Park, but there are some hidden gems that you might not know about if you haven’t had the luck to reside here.

For example, tucked away on Penn’s campus is an urban oasis known as the Bio Pond. I love bringing my 14 month old to the pond to see the fish, turtles and ducks. This spring there were even seven tiny ducklings waddling around! Between the Bio Pond, the Woodlands Cemetery (which is GORGEOUS in the spring when the azaleas are in bloom), and Clark Park I feel like we can easily enjoy nature and the outdoors right in our backyard.

When it’s raining or cold out there are a lot of activities and classes in the neighborhood: Around This World Music started in West Philly, the West Philly YMCA offers everything from swimming to soccer, Studio 34 currently has a bilingual dance and movement class for toddlers, and Wake Up Yoga was offering Baby and Me yoga classes until recently.

In addition to the many things to do in the neighborhood, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the tight-knit community. I’ve only been here a short time and I already find that I always have a friendly face to wave hello to on my way to the park or the grocery store. There is a local family e-mail list (phillyfun4kids note: to join this group, send email to clarkparktotlot [at] googlegroups [dot] com) which keeps neighbors in touch about everything from lost kittens to hand-me-down kids’ items up for grabs. I know I’ve used it for advice on pediatricians and to meet other moms for playgroups.

I think that often, people think that urban living means you have to give up the great outdoors and knowing your neighbors – but what I love about West Philly is that you can have the best of both worlds. I feel like I have that proverbial village as we raise our child, but still get to enjoy the perks of city living. I don’t drive, so I walk everywhere I go – and I love that I can walk to three grocery stores, two libraries (www.freelibrary.org), a handful of cafes and countless restaurants. I really value that my son is growing up in a vibrant and diverse area. I’m grateful that we are just a few subway stops from major historical and cultural attractions. I’m doing my best to take advantage of all these amazing aspects of West Philly and invite you to let me in on any secrets I haven’t discovered yet – and follow along (www.westphillymama.com) as we enjoy living in what I think is Philadelphia’s best neighborhood!

Would you like to share with phillyfun4kids readers what you love about your neighborhood for kids and families? We're always looking for new guest moms and dads with a passion for their particular part of the city! Email us at phillyfun4kids@gmail.com!

PHS Pop-Up Garden Fun

The other day I happened to be walking up Market Street when I noticed a beautiful garden where I had never noticed one before. It was complete with benches and other wonderful spots to sit and enjoy the garden. Turns out it was a Philadelphia Horticultural Society Pop-Up Garden that is only available for a limited time and runs special programs and events through the end of the summer.

This summer, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society has created Pops Up garden spaces at three Center City sites. The sudden transformations on the urban landscapes demonstrate the organization’s year-round work in design, horticulture, sustainability, and building healthy communities. PHS gardeners also conduct free garden walks every Wednesday and Thursday, from 12 noon to 2 p.m.

At the 20th and Market location, PHS has transformed a vacant lot in bustling Center City into a peaceful oasis, providing a welcome reprieve from the workday. The garden is open on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 12 noon - 2pm and everyone is welcome to visit. In addition Science in the Garden with The Franklin Institute for kids runs at 12:30pm every other Wednesday.

The transformed landscape covers nearly 32,000 square feet and includes an herb and vegetable production area. The central goal for this downtown destination is to raise awareness for City Harvest, a PHS program that provides fresh produce for Philadelphians in need. Learn more here. Visitors will also get to re-experience “écolibrium,” an exhibit of sustainable building and gardening originally created by Temple University Ambler for the 2011 Philadelphia International Flower Show.

Funding for this temporary green space comes courtesy of the William Penn Foundation, with additional assistance from the Brandywine Realty Trust and Independence Blue Cross. Six nearby restaurants are also participating by offering special dishes that use produce grown at the garden; proceeds will be donated to PHS for future greening initiatives.

The three Pop-Up Gardens are located at 20th and Market, PHS Headquarters and Logan Square. For a full-line up of events at the PHS 20th and Market Pop-Up Garden can be found at http://pennhort.net/phspopsupevents.
