Honestly, you might not think there is a neighborhood kid scene because of the row houses in our neighborhood but we sit on our stoop a lot and other neighborhood kids just come out all the time and hang out or play a little hopscotch or baseball and ride bikes. It's part of living in Queen Village that is so fun -- getting kids outside but the scenery changes constantly with all the different passers-by and activity. Plus we can have our dogs outside so that's fun, too.
We do a lot of playgrounds and parks, especially in spring and fall. In summer if its too hot so we do Weccacoe Playground between 4th and 5th and Catherine. Queen Village is supposed to get a sprayground soon, too. Mario Lanza Park has a dog run and a little park with Tuesdays dedicated for kids with special events and programs. They had the Mummers, a bike safety event, and a fireman came to do a Touch Truck which the kids loved. We go to Three Bears Park to play or Valley Green to skip stones. Or we feed the ducks at the Bio Pond at Penn. We also go to Cianfrani Park (Fitzwater between 7th and 8th) where there are tucked away vehicles in a fenced in area in these parks that kids can play in. Tricycles and bikes and other great finds. And as in most of Philly, all the public parks do kids Halloween events. Kids don't go trick or treating door to door as much downtown. They tend to go to Halloween events for families at parks instead.
For catching lunch or dinner on the go, we'll stop at hot dog places on South Street (like Hot Diggity or Ishkabibbles). And we'll check out the firestation and Starr Garden. Or a lot of the time, we'll just grab stuff on South Street and sit outside on benches on Bainbridge and eat and enjoy the people watching. Shot Tower Coffee (south side of Washington Ave), New Wave Café, and Jon's also have outside seating that's good for kids and families.
