Weekend phillyfun picks - September 7 - 9, 2012

Kids have started school. Summer is (unofficially) over. It’s Grandparents Day weekend. And this first full weekend of September is just jam packed with family friendly fun. There’s so much going on in and around Philly this weekend it’s going to be really hard for you to decide what to do. But don’t let that stop you – just pick one or several of these great events and get out and enjoy!


Joe’s Train Station Family Friday

The Party Train at Joe’s Train Station

This and every Friday through October 5th, take the kids to Joe’s Train Station to let the kids play trains while the parents get a little rest. Enjoy this new priate facility where kids can play with an electric model train layout, wooden train tables with Thomas & Friends trains, play dress-up with engineer and conductor costumers plus coloring, crafts, puzzles, toys and more - all train themed! Pizza and drink served for kids, too. Ages 3-8. $10 per child.

27th Annual Kennett Square Mushroom Festival 
Saturday September 8th - Sunday September 9th

The 27th Annual Kennett Square Mushroom Festival is a celebration of mushrooms, Southern Chester County, and family fun! Come out to Kennett Square, the Mushroom Capital of the nation, for a weekend celebrating this Chester County gem, the mushroom. Everything from mushroom soup cook-offs, an antique and classic car show, an old fashioned carnival, air show, farm tours and so much more. $2 per person ages 12 and up. Under 12 are free.

Family Arts Festival

Saturday September 8th marks the annual Family Arts Festival at the Main Line Arts Center from 10am – 3pm. This family fun festival features over 10 art projects inspired by public works of art in the Philadelphia region like the LOVE statue, Billy and Magic Gardens. Live music from the “Run of the Mill String Band” will provide for toe-tapping good times from 11:30am – 12:15pm and 12:40-1:30pm. Plus face painting, food and refreshments for all. Suggested donation $5 per family. Rain or shine.

It’s the 10th Annual Lansdowne Arts Festival takes place this Friday September 7th through Sunday September 9th. Come out for arts, crafts, live entertainment, food and so much more. Set in the beautiful historic suburb of Lansdowne, right outside of Philadelphia, the festival includes a Kids Art Tent complete with kid activities and fun for the little ones. Admission is free. Some adult art workshops required registration and range between $5-$15. 


3rd Annual Philadelphia Honey Festival

The 3rd Annual Philadelphia Honey Festival sponsored by The Philadelphia Bee Keepers Guild is taking place Friday September 7th through Sunday September 9th at the Wagner Free Institute of Science in Philadelphia. Bring your little ones out to enjoy this celebration of all things honey! Learn all about bees, beekeeping, honey and more in the three-day festival with workshops, demonstrations, and events for all. Bring your own picnic meals and blankets to the festival to enjoy, too! Free.

Saturday September 8th marks the 3rd Annual Bryn Mawr Day from 10am – 2pm featuring the re-opening of the Luddington Library including library tours, author events and more. Plus kids will enjoy a mini-circus, firetruck rides, free food, music and street performers all over Brywn Mawr Avenue and much more. Free.

Zippity Zoo Day

It’s a weekend of art at the Brandywine Zoo in Wilmington, DE this Saturday September 8th – Sunday September 9th from 10am – 5pm. But this featured art is not created by humans but by the zoo animals themselves! Kids will also enjoy wild art station, a discovery cart and many live animal encounters. Zippity Zoo Day is held in conjunction with the Brandywine Festival of the Arts. Free.

Brandywine Festival of the Arts

The Brandywine Festival of the Arts takes place this Saturday September 8th and Sunday September 9th at Brandywine Park in Wilmington, DE. This annual festival features hundreds of juried crafts and artisans. Come out to the beautiful Brandywine region for this end of summer festival with fun, food, arts and more. Admission $5. Children 12 and under free. Includes admission to the Brandywine Zoo. \

Fairy Festival

It’s a Festival of Fairies at The Rosemary House and Gardens this Saturday September 8th and Sunday September 9th from 10am – 4pm amidst the herb gardens and rosemary house. Kids of all ages will be delighted by family fun featuring the beloved fairy including pixie face painting, dress up for fairies, princesses, knights, elves, and pirates. Plus fairy themed crafts and activities and even fairy food on the fly and fairy lunches ($6 by advance order only. Call 717-697-5785 to reserve fairy lunch.) Free for children up to 16 years. Pennsylvania Coast Day

Kids can discover their connections to the coast this Saturday September 8th at Pennsylvania Coast Day at the Independence Seaport Museum. Enjoy free tours on the RiverLink Ferry or even set off in a kayak or swan boat. There will also be outdoor exhibits, face painting and prizes. Plus take a free shuttle to the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center. Discounted admission to the Independence Seaport Museum for just $5. Free.

Greenfest Philly

It’s the 7th annual Greenfest Philly sponsored by the Clean Air Council this Sunday September 9th from 11am – 5pm in historic Headhouse Square. This largest environmental festival in the Philadelphia area features over 100 exhibitors and vendors, shopping for local green goods, great food, live music, green demonstrations, kid-friendly activities and much more – all to help Philadelphians learn more about living sustainably while having fun. Free.
