MLK Weekend Phillyfun Picks: Jan 17 – Jan 20

It’s a long holiday weekend with lots of Martin Luther King Jr. Day events and happenings for kids and families running through the holiday on Monday. And it’s our great city’s Founding Father’s 308th birthday so families can celebrate Ben, too. Plus the Philly Home Show is in town and there’s plenty more fun like mini golf, ice skating and much more!

Benjamin Franklin’s Birthday Celebration

Celebrate Philly’s famous Founding Father, Benjamin Franklin’s birthday all weekend long Friday January 17th – Sunday January 19th from 1-4pm at the Historic Philadelphia Center. Enjoy Ben in 3D at the Liberty 360 show, plus an appearance by Ben himself with storytelling, and other special activities for the whole family to celebrate Dr. Franklin’s 308th. $6 adults, $5 children 12 and under. $20 for a family 4 pack.

The FREE Martin Luther King Day of Service taking place at the National Liberty Museum in Philly this weekend includes guided tours of the museum every hour on the hour from 11am – 4pm and a closer look at the historic “I Have a Dream” speech. Guests can also take part in a mixed-media personal heroes craft, enjoy a playlist of inspiring songs and participate in a 1 hour workshop on how becoming an “upstander” from 11:30-12:30, too. Free.

The Franklin Institute celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. with a special celebration for families on Monday January 20th from 11am – 2pm. Come out to the Franklin to participate in a Scavenger Hunt that will have kids learning about scientific discovereies made by famous African American scientists. Kids will also make a dreamcatcher craft and listen to the powerful words of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech that will be broadcast at the top of each hour. Free with admission.

Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service with this Art and Service Day at the Philadelphia Museum of Art on Monday January 20th from 10am – 3pm. Artwork created in the Museum will be distributed to local service organizations in the Philadelphia region. While you’re there you can also add your voice to the Book of Dreams for the Community and listen to a lively performance from the Camden Sophisticated Sisters that will have your whole family clapping and stomping to their exciting energy and beats. Martin Luther King Weekend at Eastern State Penitentiary

Eastern State Penitentiary offers its Martin Luther King Weekend running all day Saturday January 18th through Monday January 20th. The weekend-long celebration will include readings of the landmark text “Letter from Birmingham Jail” read by professional actors three times daily at 11:30am, 1:30pm, and 3:30pm. Readings are free and open to the public. Free tickets required and available online or at the door subject to availability. Free.

The Philadelphia Orchestra performs its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Free Tribute Concert this Monday January 20th at 1:30pm at Girard College Chapel. The community is invited to join the Philadelphia Orchestra as it honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with this free concert. Attendees are asked to bring school supplies which will be collected at the concert for distributing in the community. Free. Seating is general admission and first come, first served. Tickets are limited to 4 per person. Doors open at 12:30pm.

Most kids and many parents have off this Monday for the national Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Philadelphia is rich with opportunities to serve in ways that suit you and your family and help your own community. Check out these fantastic events to honor this important American and his dream. 17th Annual Martin Luther King Day of Service

OrKID Day at Longwood Gardens

OrKID Day at Longwood Gardens which takes place during Longwood Gardens spectacular Orchid Extravaganza, is a special day filled with crafts, a kid‘s performance by Sharon Katz & the Peace Train, specially planned activities such as a “Dreams for Our World” activity where kids can share their dreams for peace and beauty in the world. Plus college students from local universities will read aloud from Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legendary “I Have A Dream” speech. The concert pays tribute to King’s vision of a society free of prejudice and racial divisions, and his belief in the power of music to help create positive change. Free.
