Disney Social Media Moms #OTR Recap

July 30, 2014 - 5 Comments

Recently (ok, ok… actually it was over a month ago actually but to me it feels like just yesterday still) I had the sheer joy and pleasure of attending the Disney Social Media Moms On The Road conference that took place right here in Philly! This was such an exciting event in so many ways for me personally and professionally but mostly because it allowed me to be with fellow Disney lovers and experience a little Disney magic right here in my own backyard!

IMG_1009

I arrived at the conference hotel and as I managed to work my way around the parking lot looking for a space to park I was giddy to see all the Disney car decals and themed bumper stickers! It’s not that often you get to see so many cars sporting their Disney pride all in one place and I just knew then that it was going to be a magical day.

Once inside the hotel I followed the crowds and started to stand in line to register. There were moms in Maleficient horns, Dads in Mickey Mouse ties, bloggers dressed up like snow white and of course plenty of ears!

The next bit of Disney magic came when I heard a loud voice happily bellowing about how the wait for a Fast Pass in was shorter than a regular line. Only later did I learn who the man behind the voice was (more on that soon…) but it immediately made me feel like I was in Disney World just hearing anyone talk about Fast Pass lines!

After a bit of eager and excited standing about they finally let us in to the main room and it was so fun to see everything and take it all in. The tables were all cutely decorated and some even had Disney stuffed animals on them. The centerpieces were a suitcase with a sign with table names like “Hashtag Highway” (my table)! I got to meet and be table mates with the adorable Amanda from Sneezing Pixie Dust. I’m so happy I got to sit next to such a huge Disney fan like her because the two of us were giddy with all the Disney joy together!

IMG_0982

There were also several photo stations throughout the room and in one corner was a man dressed in a jedi robe with Donal Duck ears and a bill. Because I’m enough of Disney dork I was just excited to go have my picture taken with with “The Jedi Donald Guy.” Only later did I learn that this was in fact Gary Buchanan, social media guru for Disney Parks. Maybe it’s a good thing I didn’t know who it was because I was clearly not awake nor nearly caffeinated enough to be witty or aware and just sort of smiled and got my pix with him and shuffled off. Oh well, Gary – maybe next time! In the process of waiting for him though, I chatted up some great new friends and learned how to make more room on my iPhone for all the pix I knew would be taken that day from the super sweet Lori from Take Time for Today (“Hi Lori!”). Love meeting sweet and smart new blogging friends from other parts of the country! Lori actually drove in from New England for this event – aren’t we lucky here in Philly that it was so close for us this year??

I wandered next over to the Photo Booth area and got my Mickey hands pix taken which was fun and exciting for me too. Having never worn Mickey hands myself this was a new Disney first and hopefully won’t be the last. All of the Disney props and excitement had me feeling like I was back in Disney World again!! Soon we were all called to sit for breakfast and the official program began (we were here for a conference after all!). We were welcomed to the day by some of the Disney Parks Social Media team including Jen Fickley-Baker, Social Media Manager for Walt Disney World, Disney Parks, and Disney Parks Blog (you know, she’s like actually a pretty big deal, right?!!) She had some fabulous Disney background to share and talked to us about some of the things that make social media work so well for Disney including the focus on storytelling, attention to detail, and the value of celebration. One of the things Jen shared that I just loved was the behind the scenes of the making of the Ultimate Tweet – a 140 character photo with 140 Disney characters making a hashtag symbol and shot from above. Brilliant, right???!! And oh so fun to see if you’re a big Disney addict like me. Check out more on the making of this Ultimate Tweet on the Disney Parks Blog post.

And then Gary Buchanan, Walt Disney World Social Media Managing Editor, took the stage. (You know the jedi guy from my early am photo opp??). Gary shared some great info about recent Disney campaigns. One of the funniest things he shared was this great video about the “Diaper Dans” which for any Disney fan will strike a fun chord! Check out the Diaper Dans video for a laugh! Another brilliant campaign Gary mentioned was a contest that just is wrapping up called Be the Eighth Miner. This is a totally fun contest in conjunction with the release of the awesome new Seven Dwarfs Mine Ride. What a fantastic way to get people engaged and in on the action, right? This contest is now over but you can see the winners of each challenge (to take a photo or video of yourself as one of the dwarfs) and find out the grand prize winner of the Be the Eighth Miner contest who gets a trip to Disney by following hashtag #8thMinerContest.

After Gary, we heard from HP, a premier sponsor of the event. HP had so much exciting info to share but the most exciting for me was something called Instant Ink – a subscription based ink service from HP that automatically detects when your HP printer is low on ink and sends you a new pack of ink cartridges. Um, HELLO – life changing, right??? You’re welcome. For more on HP solutions and ideas that will help you day in and day out, be sure to follow #HPSmartMom.

IMG_1002

Next up we heard from Victoria Lim, Managing Editor, Walt Disney World Public Relations who talked to us about Creating Visual Content with ease. For me, Victoria’s talk was absolutely one of the most useful as she shared some incredibly practical tips and trips for making and delivering rich social content. Victoria has such great energy and enthusiasm and experience to share and really got into some of the details of the best tools for creators of multimedia content. Two big take-aways for me from Victoria’s talk were to “Zoom with your Feet” and to check out a cool and easy video tool called Videolicious. If you start to see more videos on phillyfun4kids it will be because of Victoria!

Our next session was a fabulous panel of three women focusing on the life of Mom Business Owners. This was a really interesting and honest panel of three highly successful Moms including Amy Bradley the inventor of Toy Dozer; Kristi Gorinas, creator of Dad Pack (and past winner of the Huggies Mom Inspired Grant program!); and Jen Grover, inventor of the Butler Bag. What I really liked most about this panel was how honest each of these women were about the costs and joys of their business success. Of course many questions focused on how to achieve that ideal balance between kids and family and achieving success. In some cases, the answers were not easy. One of the panelists admitted that she missed many of the early memories and moments in her kids lives and that she regretted it. Even though it was a hard answer to hear, I appreciated the honesty very much because I sometimes feel like we’re striving for a balance between business success and family time that might not exist. Of course it does exist in different shapes and forms but there are choices made and consequences from each, right?

Finally, the day ended with an inspiring talk by author and motivational speaker, Debi Silber, aka The Mojo Coach who was energetic, inspiring and very motivational. Debi talked about the effect of stress and stress induced behaviors on your body and mind, the immunity boosting effect of surrounding yourself with positive (not negative) people and the importance of being present in The Now. She was funny and awesome and ended her talk with a group toast (no booze just Diet Cokes and coffee of course!) to our health and success! What a great positive way to end this magical day, huh?

IMG_1014
But no, that wasn’t the end of the magic. To cap off this most wonderful day, we were greeted by none other than Mickey Mouse too! I waited in line to meet the Mouse and got to talk with and meet more amazing people. And when I got up to Mickey not only did we pose together but he grabbed my arm as if to dance – so sweet and fun!

I became a Disney fan after we took our two small girls to Walt Disney World for the first time two years ago. You can read all about why Disney was so magical for us all and how much I encourage families to take young children to Disney here. Since then my love for Disney has only grown and increased each year and this conference was yet another magic moment for me as I got to hear and learn more from an insider perspective about how Disney Parks works its special magic!

Thank you so much to Disney Parks, Maria Bailey of MomSelect, all the amazing sponsors including HP, Huggies, and all the fabulous speakers and panelists for a most amazing day!! It was such an honor and privilege to be able to attend!

Disclosure: I was not financially compensated for this post but I was provided with several awesome goodies from Disney Parks and the fabulous sponsors of the event (not the least of which was a Rice Krisipe Mickey ears treat straight from Disney!) and breakfast at this half day Disney conference event. As always all opinions expressed about all things Disney being magical or the opportunity to learn from smart successful women entrepreneurs being such a privilege are my own.

Review: Disney Junior Live on Tour! Pirate & Princess Adventure!

May 15, 2014 - 1 Comment

On Saturday my family and I had the privilege to go check out the Disney Junior Live on Tour! Pirate & Princess Adventure! show and it was so much fun!!! It was in Philly for one day only at the Liacouras Center and we got to check out the 7pm show. We got inside and found our seats (after picking up some light-up spinning souvenirs, of course) and were all so excited for the show to start. About 10 minutes before show time DocMcStuffins came out and did a little pre-show clinic which was really cute and kept the kids excited and engaged before the show even got started. And after she worked her toy fixing magic we all got to sing along “I feel better, so much better, thank you Doc for taking all my ouchies away!”

Then at 7pm, the show started with Mickey and Minnie Mouse coming out off from the side of the stage and I’m not too proud to admit that I audibly gasped with excitement!! I mean – come on – where else can you see Mickey and Minnie except in the Disney Parks right?? So to have them just walk out on the floor mere feet away from you was such a fun and exciting way to start the show!

It then opened up with a sequence about Sofia the First and featured her entire royal family including her parents, James and Amber and even Baileywick! At one point Sofia is not sure what to give her friends and her magical Amulet connects her to all the princesses and Cinderella shows up which of course my two girls just loved! The whole first half was really high energy and fun and had great costumes, sets, and of course – songs.

There was a brief intermission (toward the end of what was maybe 15-20 minutes or so max) there were even pirates that came out to take photos and mingle with the kids. This really helped break up the intermission especially since it was getting to be past bedtime for many of the kids in the audience for sure.

The second half of the show was all about Jake and the Neverland Pirates and featured Jake (of course) as well as Izzy, Cubby, and Scully as well as Captain Hook, Smee, and the crew and even Peter Pan and Tinkerbelle too!

Jake and the gang battle with Captain Hook to unlock treasure hidden inside a mysterious volcano with the help of Peter Pan and even Tink! It’s a rollicking good time with great songs and high seas chase scenes and high jinx and really great use of the interactive screen on the stage to make it feel like the crew and the audience are right there with the gang on the Never Seas!

Disney Junior Live on Tour Pirate & Princess Adventure was so much fun! My whole family loved the show! Once again Disney and Feld Entertainment do it again and bring a truly magical Disney experience to families! Thanks for a great time!

Disney Junior Live On Tour! Pirate & Princess Adventure is on tour now through next Spring 2015! Check out a show coming near you at the Disney Junior Live on Tour website for complete dates and tour stops.

Disclosure: I was provided with 4 tickets for the purposes of reviewing the show as well as 4 tickets to giveaway to my readers – yay. As always, all opinions expressed about Disney being magical and any excuse to see Mickey and Minnie let alone my kids favorite Disney Junior characters being awesome are our own!!

Our Disneyside @Home Celebration

February 27, 2014 - 8 Comments

This weekend we had the most fun showing our #Disneyside by having a party with some friends to celebrate all things Disney! Honestly, I am always game for any and all excuses to be thinking about Disney so when the opportunity to be a Disney Side @Home Celebration Host came up I was thrilled and grateful beyond belief to be selected to participate!

To help get our Disney Side parties underway Disney Parks and MomSelect sent us some fabulous supplies and awesome goodies in our Disney Side @Home Celebration Kits. My kids and I were so eager to see what was in our kits and couldn’t wait to open it up when it finally arrived.

I immensely enjoyed planning the Disney Side party and trying to think about what surprises and Disney magic we could share with our guests. Because there’s nothing quite like pinterest when planning a party or getting craft inspiration, I had a blast getting ideas from other Disney sites and fans there. Check out the Disney Side @Home pinterest board I created. Here is a wreath I made for the party to help welcome guests with a little Mickey magic!

Also take a look at the Disney Side Celebrations website for great inspiration, recipes, virtual tools, and so much more! You can even get cool Disney Side photo borders and effects by using the HP Photo Creations app available on this site, too.

Invitations to our big event were created using the HP Photo Paper that was included in our Celebration kits. Here they are! This is used with a photo we took in front of Cinderella Castle on our first trip to Disney World in 2012. This picture makes me ridiculously happy and I hope it helped conveyed to our guests some of the excitement of what was to come!

After much planning and trips to Michael’s and the party store and the grocery store (and the wine store!) our Disney Side party was this past weekend and we had about 40 kids and adults over to come show their Disney Side with us and just have a great fun time.

Guests were encouraged to come dressed up as their favorite Disney character or theme which I’m so pleased to say they embraced! One family even was decked out in a Star Wars theme with the mom wearing a Darth Vader tutu she hand created and a custom shirt she made herself. She also made her daughter a Minnie Mouse outfit with tutu and ears and everything – so cute! Other guests wore their Mickey ears or princess dresses or Star Wars shirts. It was great to see how everyone chose to show their unique Disney Side!

We had a Disney Frozen Sing-A-Long which was a huge (HUGE) hit. We also did pin trading and had a Disney Freeze Dance too. For food we tried to keep in theme and had Mickey Mac’n’Cheese, Minnie’s Meatballs, Buffalo Bill Chicken, Mickey’s Clubhouse sandwhiches (bread and cheese were cut with Mickey cookie cutters!), Princess fruit wands, and hidden Mickey Cupcakes too. Planning all the food and thinking about how we could incorporate Disney theming into every aspect was so much fun!

A good friend of mine even made these incredible custom wine glasses for the adults which were so much festive to use and each guest even got to take their glass home with them, too. Each family also got to go home with the so sweet “So This is Love” poster provided by Disney Parks as well as a pack of HP Photo Paper. Kids got to pick a pin for their lanyards and also went home with a fun goody bag I made with other great items that came in our Disney hostess kits like balloons or ESPN Sports bracelets and tattoos and stickers and other Disney themed items I either picked up at the dollar store or Michael’s.

If you want to have your own Disneyside @Home Celebration anytime of year check out http://www.disneysidecelebrations.com/ for tips, suggestions and fantastic resources to get you started! And I’d love to know how you show your Disneyside – feel free to leave a comment below with ways you like to show your Disneyside and bring the magic home all year long!

Our celebration was such a blast and I’m so grateful to Disney Parks and MomSelect and all the wonderful sponsors (including Disney Parks, American Tourister, HP, Two Smiles, ESPN World of Sports, ABC’s The Chew, Craisins, and Hanes) for the incredible opportunity to have fun showing our Disneyside! And of course big thanks to all of our family and friends who came out and showed your Disney Side too – we hope you had as much fun as we did! What do you think? Should we do it again next year?

Disclosure: I was provided with a #Disneyside @Home Celebration hostess kit that included many of the supplies used for the party. No monetary compensation was provided. As always all opinions expressed about all things Disney being magical are my own.

If you’re thinking of going and planning to buy tickets, don’t forget to use the discount code “BLOG” to get $10 off your tickets here.

Princesses and their Princes

This year’s show was called Let’s Celebrate and kicked off with a unique unbirthday party with Mickey and Alice in Wonderland and the Mad Hatter and more of everyone’s favorite Disney characters, too. After the tone of the event was set by the unbirthday party fun, next up was a very beautiful skit with Mickey turning into Sorcerer Mickey and the dancing brooms. The production of this number was just stunning. I love the way Feld Entertainment makes use of lights and color in these shows and this reminded me of the Ariel Under the Sea number from last year in its really exceptional use of glow-in-the dark colors and costumes.

Sorcerer Mickey and the Dancing Brooms

The rest of the show featured a sequence of stunning celebrations including spring with Minnie and the Cherry Blossoms in Japan, Halloween with Jack Skellington and the Disney Villains, Valentine’s Day, summer vacation in Hawaii, Mardi Gras in New Orleans, and then wrapped up with an awesome Christmas finale.

Snow in the Finale!

What I really loved most about this year’s show was how they incorporated a large interactive screen that changed with the different scenes and holidays. It was very cleverly done and really added to the overall production of the show. As always, the costumes were so beautiful and the details were so special. I loved seeing Minnie’s different outfits throughout each holiday celebration. She looked particularly beautiful during the Japanese cherry blossom tribute to spring.

My Girls Were Riveted to the Show

I also loved how the audience was encouraged to interact in several of the performances like when Mickey got us all screaming “Boo” to scare away the villains in the Jack Skellington skit or how the Fairy Godmother had us all yelling “Bippity Boppity Boo” to help change Minnie into a beautiful princess. The kids of course LOVE this and were so into yelling and being a real part of the show.

It was really such a fun and lively show. My whole family had a blast and I’m so excited that this is now our annual tradition of going to see the Disney On Ice show right after the Christmas holiday. It’s such an exciting way to keep the magic of the season going and enjoy a really special memory with your family during the holidays.

Here are a few tips that might be helpful for you if you go:
– Parking was $16 and is cash only. Leave enough time for any crowds or traffic so you don’t miss the opening.
– The show runs a little under two hours with a brief intermission.
– Food vendors in the Wells Fargo Center take credit/debit cards but the vendors who come walking down the aisles during intermission with snow cones, popcorn, lemonade and cotton candy are cash only. Most items are at least $10 each. All of the items being sold in the aisle during intermission for cash only can also be found in the hallways at their regular stands for credit/debit purchase too.
– There are vendors with Disney merchandise everywhere. Be prepared as your kids will ask for all these great light up gizmos and toys they are selling. There are also face paint and photo stations. Of course, these cost $$ too.
– Dress on the warm side as it does tend to get a little chilly.
– Feel free to let your kids bring and wear their Mickey ears or princess crowns and dresses. Many kids are in costume or wear tiaras or mouse ears.
