Recently, we were invited to check out the showing of Freckleface Strawberry The Musical on stage at the Upper Darby Performing Arts Center as part of their Summer Stage Children’s Theater series. The show was so cute and wonderful. We all loved it!

I was so impressed with the quality of the performance, the production values of the show, and just the overall enjoyment factor. The summer stage actors did a great job at really engaging the audience which was comprised largely of families and lots of young children. They keep it entertaining and funny and engaged the audience by often running up and down the aisles and looking at audience members directly as if they were singing to only them. As soon as my younger daughter’s attention might start to fade a little she would be re-engaged because one of the cast members would be running up the aisle or doing something that caught her eye. The show is a family-friendly length (of just around 60 minutes) and so kids’ attention spans are not taxed too much with trying to sit still for too long. And, the price can’t be beat at just $6-$9 for most seats.

What’s really cool is that after the show the principal characters wait outside for meet and greet opportunities with the kids so you can have a fun photo opp and get the “stars'” autographs, too! My two girls LOVED this part of the experience and got to meet Freckleface Strawberry herself and get her autograph on their programs.
Upper Darby Summer Stage is one of nation’s oldest and most successful youth theater programs. For five years in a row (2008-2012), Summer Stage has been voted by My Fox Philly’s Best Theater Group in Philadelphia! The Mission of Upper Darby Summer Stage is to encourage young people to develop the magic of their talents, personality and energy, and to share that magic with audiences through outstanding theatrical performances for the entire family. Each summer, over 700 young people from in and around the Delaware Valley come to Summer Stage and participate in one of our programs. Participants range in age from 11 to 28. What a great program, huh?
The next summer stage children’s theater show hitting the stage this week is A Year With Frog and Toad running August 7th – 10th at 10:30am and Thursday August 8th at 7:30pm. The final summer stage children’s theater show of the year will be Willy Wonka Jr. running August 14th – 16th. In addition to the children’s theater shows, Upper Darby Summer Stage also runs a mainstage production which this year is Fiddler On The Roof playing through August 10th. Tickets for mainstage shows just run $10-$13.
